MS/HS COVID-19 Grading Procedures

May 01, 2020

With the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nodaway-Holt R-VII School District administration team have met on numerous occasions to outline and plan a system for grading our students during these unprecedented times. While 1st semester and 3rd quarter were not impacted by the closure, the 4th quarter was almost entirely canceled. Based on the lack of face-to-face instruction and with a desire to create an equitable solution we will implement a hold harmless grading policy for the 4th quarter and the Spring Semester.

Please note that a student’s 3rd quarter grade will be the “floor” grade they can receive for the 4th quarter. This means that the grade a student earned for the 3rd quarter will be the lowest possible grade they can receive for the 2nd semester. Students cannot receive a lower grade than what was earned in the 3rd quarter.

During the closure a student’s grade can only improve their 4th quarter grade. Students who wish to improve their 4th quarter grades will have the opportunity to do so in the following ways:

  1. Complete unfinished assignments given prior to the school closure.
  2. Complete the enrichment work that was assigned during the school closure for improved credit.

As far as Launch classes are concerned, please see the following updates provided by Launch:

  • Launch teachers were provided with Q3 grades on April 29th in order to begin adjusting grades for students to reflect their No-Harm policy. (Note: The Spring end-of-term grade will not be lower than the 3rd quarter progress grade.) Launch teachers will have those grades adjusted in the grade book by noon on Thursday, April 30th.
  •  There will be NO final exams. If a student already took their final, points will be positively applied as extra credit, or they will be used to replace another assignment. This applies to culminating events, end-of-unit assessments, and any proctored final, however, this does not apply to Liberty and Law, as there are state-required Civics and Constitution tests within that final*
  •  For Launch’s Credit Acquisition courses, the pass percentage grade has been adjusted to 50%
  •  All seniors with a grade of 50% or higher will pass their course. Teachers will announce this to seniors directly through their Canvas Inbox and not in a course announcement. Non-participation focus should be prioritized for seniors, then 30-60% “bubble” students, in the following weeks.

The Nodaway-Holt R-VII School District is aware that this is a stressful time for our community, and we want these policies to serve as a stress reliever for our students and families. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your student’s teacher(s) or building administrator. Our goal is to work with our community during these times and to provide an avenue for all families to remain connected to our school.
